22 May 2010 ~ four hundred and nineteen

Yesterday was Prometheum XIII.

It also was a terrible but fun day for me. The day started out with me waking up at 6:50 AM, waiting for the bus for 20 minutes and nearly being late for school - thankfully assembly was "pushed back" because of the rain. More like it was forced (because for the last 3 days we didn't have assembly because of the wetness) so that they could announce the new council takeover.

That aside, there was Maths lecture test. No comment.

I'm starting to really enjoy my class' regular sports sessions of frisbee and touch rugby. Won't go so far as to say it keeps me fit, but having regular sport is something foreign to me: none of the previous social circles I've been in indulged in such constant games. I like it even though I'm not so good at either XD.

And Friday is our mega sports day in that we play after PE, then during the 2 hour break after Chem, and maybe sometimes after school.

After school was NAPFA, and my points amazingly doubled (well, nearly), although it was still an expected fail. Failed SBJ by about 10cm, 2.4km run by 8s, and pull-ups by... well, 4 pull-ups. Went from 5 points total to 9 points, and I know this is nothing to be proud of, but it's a start I guess :/.

*at shuttle run station, with 15 other guys in the group*
teacher: OK boys if you get A I'm not letting you retake because we don't have time.

*after everyone has a recorded score*
teacher: OK those who got A can't retake ah. Let's see uh...
*looks down at paper*
teacher: ... so, Alastair do you want to retake?

And it took a lot longer than I hoped it would. Started at about 4 PM and ended at 6, so I missed the whole RWinds rehearsal. When I reached VCH it was nearly 7.

Prometheum XIII was a little disjointed for me, seeing that I had to miss a few songs to go play for RWinds. Nevertheless, I came out to watch whenever I could.

It might be a little harsh to say that RIMB exceeded my expectations on the whole, but that was what I really felt - in the sense that I got the general impression from batchmates that they were really, really bad. Well, indeed there were some bad parts of the performance, but on the other hand I thought there were some good parts. I didn't like the first song or two - really too many hiccups and many things were badly taken, like entrances and the general carrying of melody. It got better after that - best piece of the concert I thought was Scenes From A Comedy. Congrats on the solo Irvin, it was smoothly and confidently taken :).

Intermission was getting ready for RWinds' two pieces, Selections from Disney/Pixar's "Up" and Highlights from "Chess". Although I loved the movie, I don't like the arrangement of Up, award-winning as it may be. Chess is a different story though - it's not only familiar, I think it's as beautiful as pieces like And Then The Ocean Glows and Saga Maligna.

Anyway, we went up and played. I must comment that this has been the most stress-free concert I've ever played in, on the most part due to my insanely complete neglection of my QM duties. In this I'm torn: should I try to make it up by volunteering for another job for CODA VI (and in all probability epic fail it like I have every other band job I've undertaken) or stay away from these kind of responsibilities?

Of course this point is moot because I fail NAPFA and thus am likely not to be able to make it for CODA VI anyway.

Back to point. Up and Chess over, and I think we did a pretty good job. Went back to the audience after two songs from RIMB (yes, I heard it backstage, and yes, I too thought From Symphony No. 1 was going to be classical) and sat through to the end of the concert.

Am I proud of RIMB? Yes, I definitely am. Although there were some questionable parts here and there, the songs were on the whole interesting, and managed to roll on. And the concert was successful, in that felt my $10 was worth it, and the audience looked about 75% filled.

Well of course I could go on to say that there was a lot that could be cleaned up. Someone remarked to me (can't remember who) during the performance that there are a lot of things we take for granted in RJCSB, and I find that I agree.

Ultimately, I believe that it doesn't matter what seniors think or say though, and judging whether the performance was a good one or not is best done by the heart of the performer.

A wildy optimistic and unrealistic mentality that will get me criticized to the bone, but whatever.

After the concert was over, I did not go back on the lorry like a good QM should, but instead went to hang out with my batchmates by the river (I assume it was the Singapore River). Went home after ice cream and drinks from Macs.

To me, that last part was the best part of the day for me, because I really enjoy the company of my batchmates, something that I won't be able to have for much longer. Love you all, enough said.

I have recently been introduced to this game called Harvest: Massive Encounter, and boy is it addictive.

As the game goes on everything becomes messier and messier...

... until you're overrun.
